Sex chat, or sexchat as many people type it, is a written conversation between adults who want to talk about desire and limits, at their own pace. On ChatNow it takes place in the rooms set aside for it, and you join anonymously: ChatNow is a free chat with no sign-up, so you pick a username and you are in, with no email address and no password. Some call it lewd chat; the Community Rules call it sexual conversation between consenting adults. This page covers where it is allowed, how to join, which rooms to try, what others can see and how to stay safe.

This chat at a glance

  • Rooms for adults. The themed rooms sit under "Adult rooms" in the room list; nine of them are described further down.
  • Free, as a guest. A username, your gender, your age and your town: that is all ChatNow asks of a guest.
  • Consent first. Anyone can say no, or block you, at any moment, and the conversation ends there.
  • You choose who stays. "Block" works at once, and "Report" sits on every message and profile.
  • Adults only. ChatNow is for people aged 18 and over; you give your age when you join.

What is allowed, and where

ChatNow does not leave this to guesswork. Its Community Rules allow "Sexual conversation, and the exchange of sexual images or webcam between consenting adults" in two places: the rooms listed under "Adult rooms", and private conversations where the other person has clearly agreed. For everywhere else, the rules need four words: "Elsewhere, keep it non-sexual."

So the general rooms, starting with "English speakers", stay for everyday conversation. Two more lines from the rules apply to every exchange: "A first message must not be sexual unless invited." and "Consent can be withdrawn at any time".

The exact wording is in the Community Rules, under What is allowed.

Joining as a guest: three steps

  1. Fill in the form: a username of 3 to 20 characters, your gender (Man, Woman, Trans, CD or Couple), your age, 18 or over, and your town, chosen from the suggestions as you type.
  2. Press "Enter free as a guest": chatnow.fr opens with your details already filled in, and one more click takes you into the "English speakers" room.
  3. Change room: open "Rooms", go down to "Adult rooms" and tap the room you want.

Your username stays the same for the whole visit; to keep it from one visit to the next, you need a free account.

The adult rooms, and who writes in them

Under "Adult rooms" you will find, among others, the nine rooms below, with the descriptions ChatNow gives them:

RoomChatNow's description
CuckoldCuckold fantasies
Wife sharingCouple sharing and exhibition
CouplesFor couples and group fun
BDSMBondage, domination and submission
RoleplayScenarios and roleplay
GayA friendly space for gay men
LesbianA friendly space for lesbians
TransA space for trans people
CrossdressersA space for crossdressers

"Gay" is open to profiles set to Man and "Lesbian" to profiles set to Woman; the other seven are open to all five genders on the form.

These rooms are the same for every country. People from several countries write in them, often in French; how many come from the UK we do not know, and we do not promise it. English is welcome there all the same. For a conversation that stays in English, use "English speakers": a message in another language is usually removed shortly after it is sent, with the notice "This room is English only."

Guest or free account: private messages and webcam

A guest can already do most things; a free account adds the rest:

You want toAs a guestWith a free account
Write in the roomsYes, when you connect from the UK or IrelandYes
Send private messagesText and voice notesText, voice notes, photos and videos
Watch webcams in a roomYesYes
Turn on your own webcamNoYes, in a room or in private
Keep your usernameFor this visitYes
Use "Contact filters"NoYes

Some members accept private messages from accounts only: the "Contact filters" include an "Allow guests" setting, along with gender, age and distance. A private webcam works by invitation: one person offers to share their webcam, and the other chooses "Accept" or "Decline".

A free account takes an email address, a password, a date of birth and a gender, or a Google sign-in.

Premium is an optional paid add-on. It never renews automatically and changes nothing about safety, moderation or reporting.

Consent first: what is never allowed

The rules draw the line at consent, age and the law. In the adult rooms as in private:

  • Ask before you show. Photos and webcam only after a clear yes; silence is not a yes.
  • No unwanted images. Images nobody asked for are banned; in England and Wales, cyberflashing is a criminal offence under section 66A of the Sexual Offences Act 2003.
  • No recording. ChatNow does not record webcams, and nobody may record, screenshot or re-stream someone else's webcam or voice notes.
  • No sharing without consent. In England and Wales, sharing an intimate photo or film of someone without their consent, or threatening to, is a criminal offence under section 66B of the same Act.
  • Nothing involving a minor. Sexual content involving a minor, real or generated, including in roleplay, is banned and always reported to the National Crime Agency.
  • No money. Paid services, escorting and requests for money or gift cards break the rules.
  • No pressure. Writing to someone again after they asked you to stop, or blocked you, counts as harassment.

Moderators with the "Mod" badge are in the rooms every day, and an AI classifier checks each message after it is sent. The full list is in the Community Rules, under What is never allowed.

What others can see, and how long things are kept

Before you write anything personal, here is exactly what ChatNow shows:

Visible to othersNot visible
Your usernameYour email address, which a guest never gives
Your gender and ageYour real name, unless you write it yourself
Your town and an approximate distanceYour exact location: the distance is worked out between towns, with no GPS
  • As a guest, your messages and voice notes are deleted 24 hours after you leave.
  • Connection logs (IP address, times, device identifier) are kept for 12 months.
  • Webcams are never recorded by ChatNow, but anyone watching could still capture the picture on their own device.
  • A tip: a username you use nowhere else, and photos without your face, tattoos or a recognisable room, make you harder to find.

The full table is in the Privacy Policy, under how long we keep it.

Scams and sextortion: how to protect yourself

Scammers use chat rooms too, and the pattern rarely changes: a fast, flattering conversation, a request for photos or a move to another app, then a demand for money. Sextortion is the threat that follows: pay, or the pictures go to your friends and family.

  • Never pay. Not for photos, not to meet, and not to make a threat go away.
  • Send nothing more. Stop replying, and never send an image to someone who is pressuring or threatening you.
  • Report, then block. Use "Report" on the message or the profile, then "Block". Whoever you report never learns that the report came from you.
  • Note the details. Write down the username, the date and the time, because a guest's messages are deleted 24 hours after they leave, then email safety@chatnow.fr.
  • Get support. The Revenge Porn Helpline supports adults in the UK facing intimate image abuse, including threats to share, on 0345 6000 459 (Monday to Friday, 10:00 to 16:00). When someone is in danger right now, dial 999.

ChatNow itself does not create profiles, run bots or offer AI companions. Fake accounts set up by other people do turn up: report them, and they are excluded.

Standard reports are decided within 7 days; the steps are explained under reporting in the chat.

Questions before you join

Do I have to pay to chat here?
No. As a guest you chat for free, with no account and no email address. Premium exists as an optional paid add-on that never renews automatically, and you do not need it to talk.
Can I join without an email address?
Yes. A guest gives a username, a gender, an age and a town, nothing more. An email address only comes in if you decide to create a free account.
What can other people find out about me?
Your username, gender, age and town, plus an approximate distance worked out between towns. They never see your email address, and they only learn your real name if you write it yourself. As a guest, your messages are deleted 24 hours after you leave.
How do I stay safe when chatting with strangers?
Never pay anyone, keep your pictures to yourself when someone starts to pressure you, and use "Block" as soon as a conversation feels wrong. Moderators are in the rooms every day, and "Report" sits on every message and profile.
Can I use a webcam as a guest?
You can watch the webcams in a room as a guest. To turn on your own, in a room or in private, you need a free account. ChatNow does not record webcams.
What will get someone removed from the chat?
Anything sexual involving a minor, intimate images shared without consent, images nobody asked for, harassment, hate, scams and paid services. The most serious cases lead straight to a permanent ban.
How do I report a message or a profile?
Tap "Report" on the message or the profile and choose a category. Without an account, email safety@chatnow.fr. Standard reports are decided within 7 days.
Are the adult rooms in English?
Not always. The rooms are shared with other countries and conversations there are often in French. English is welcome; for a conversation that stays in English, join the "English speakers" room.
